Hi Where can I find out who the purchaser was of a ZAR Mauser Carbine with serial number 5904?

The 7,000 Boer Mauser carbines were issued (free, not purchased) to the Staatsartillerie and foreign volunteers, among others. There is no list of serial numbers vs. recipients. The only way to identify who carried it is if it has a carved name on it.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
