I have joined to find out more about my grandfather Alfred Wainwright, so far I think that he enlisted in the 3rd Northamptonshire Regiment ( Private 6031) on 22 September 1900 and was embodied 17 March 1902 for service in South Africa, the battalion left SA six months later and was disembodied on arrival back at Northampton on 20 September. I found a reference on this site to him which says "Source: QSA and KSA medal rolls" but I cannot find those rolls.
I would be interested to find out more about:
- how he got to SA
- where he was involved
- the medals
- why a 16 year old from a small village in Northants would say he was 18 and sign up for this.

Welcome to the Forum:

Perhaps you might be able to spot your grandfather on this photo from the Illustrated London News 19 April 1902 :)

This clipping from the Northampton Mercury 9 May 1902 tells you when they arrived in South Africa and where they were initially based:

They were each awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps (bars) - Cape Colony & South Africa 1902. This is a page from the battalion medal roll with your grandfather listed just over halfway down:

Truslow,

I imagine he falsified his age to be able to enlist. His declared age was 18 years and 4 month. He occupation was furnace labourer.

This is a description of him:

and service details
