Type C medals were issued from February 1942 right up to the last issue in 1982.
Under type C there are also variations where a square dot is found after the initials and cases where it is a round dot.


ABO named to BURGER W. H. J. VAN RENSBURG issued on 7 September 1943. Note the square full stops, especially visible after letter W.


ABO named to BURGER P. H. SCHUTTE issued on 28 Dec 1954. Note the very large round full stops.

An interesting sub-variety also occurs on at least one batch in 1942-43 where the figure ‘6’ was used instead of the letter ‘G’ of BURGER and, in at least one instance, even as the ‘S’ in ARTILLERIS.
(I cannot illustrate this variety as yet .)


Fakes

I am aware of two types of fake ABO and DTD medals, but there may be others out there.
First Kind- V Anchor
I am not aware of a named example but can illustrate this type.
Be on the lookout for it.
Both ABO and DTD in this type.


Fake DTD : Note Sharp V shape anchor, straight anchor bar, strange lion mane and back paw, D in Dienst shape incorrect.

2nd Type Fake
The 2nd type of fake appeared in Johannesburg around October 2018 and continued until around October 2021, although it may have been produced earlier,
and may have continued after this date. Both DTD and ABO medals were produced.


The easiest way to identify this fake, is to compare a genuine anchor with this fake.
A genuine anchor has:
1. Tapered top bar (stock) , wider below.
2. Small horizontal indentation in anchor top bar (stock), unless worn.
3. Vertical anchor shaft appears slightly offset to anchor arm.

In some fakes of this type a round hole is present on the LHS of the anchor shaft

The alloy composition on some examples was not correct, although this is easily corrected.
The incorrect composition resulted in a strange patina, rather reminiscent of old pewter.

and some lead and nickel present.

Naming on 2nd Type Fake


BURGER D. L. COHEN , correct naming would be uniform and properly aligned.
