Hi, I came across this website while researching details about my paternal great-grandfather, James Patrick Kimble. Until now, I have not been able to trace him or obtain any birth details about him other than he married Esther Minnie Drif in South Africa and he died on 15 January 1917. He is listed on this site as having served in Driscoll's scouts, together with a J Kimble (related?). Questions I have are.

Were all soldiers in Driscoll's scouts recruited in Ireland?
If so, were they recruited from all counties or from one particularly?
Did many of the above soldiers remain in South Africa after the boer War?

I would appreciate any help or references I can research

Hello Rob,
Driscolls Scouts were formally raised in Aliwal North on 17th March 1900 by Lord Kitchener, you could attest for 3-6 months or for the duration of the war, they were a Class C corps i.e. directly under the control of the AAG Colonial Forces AHQ, they became 5 sqadrons strong by December 1900.
They were disbanded at Bloemfontein on the 4th July 1902, it would not have been possible to join them in Ireland or any other part of Great Britain.
Regards Frank.

Thanks for the link, have his details now. It appears from the page I looked at that there are many South African (Afrikaans) surnames, so making the assumption my gr-grandfather was Irish is possibly a mistake.
