Hello Paul,

These can be tricky to attribute.

Hugh was MID in Lord Roberts' despatch of September 4, 1901 but there is no detail in the DCM book of any action to which it can be attributed.

Many DCMs were issued to men of his rank across the forces so it may have been for consistently good service during the war rather than one particular act.

Have you tried the regimental museum?

I see his was awarded the DSO in the New Year's Honours 1918 too.

Good luck
David

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.. It goes some way to confirming what I thought; that Hugh's decorations were indeed for 'consistently good service' rather than individual acts of bravery. He attested in 1882 as a private soldier and retired due to ill health contracted on active service (he fell from his horse whilst 'in action' Arras 1917, age 54!!!!) as Quarter Master and Hon. Lt.Col in 1920, age 57 years.. Bless him; I think that spending 38 years with the colours he deserved all the recognition he received... They don't make many men like him anymore.....

Once again many thanks.

Paul.............
