I was directed to this site by Brett Hendey (a member) after posing this question on another forum:

I Have a G Grandfather who had a Soldiers New Testament with an inscription that reads; Army No 76730 Gunner F Conway,HAC Royal Field Artillery, Field Forces S Africa.
It is dated 1900.
I have tried to find any records on F Conway at the National Archive with no Success.
I was wondering if anyone knew the most likely places the HAC Field Artillary would have operated in this time frame and why he would have been there.
Francis Conway was born in Ireland but in the 1881 census was working as a Billiard Marker and living in South Kensington. Born in 1863 he would have been a 37 year old in this conflict which I would have thought to be quite old for a private soldier

Any Ideas?

Stan,

Here's a list of the men of this name from FMP. There doesn't seem to be an exact match for him?

Thanks for the list, pardon my ignorance but what is FMP?
Interestingly I know that my GGFathers father was a soldier and born in or around Kilkenny it could be you have just found him for me! although the new testament would not be his as he would be too old

Kind regards

Stan

Stan,

Sorry, that wasn't a very clear response. FMP refers to the website FindMyPast. It is the on-line service that offers digital image of soldier's service papers, albeit at a cost. The excerpt is from the search facility (which is free - hurrah!). As an alternative, you can research at the National Archives or ask a researcher to do this for you and access the original documents.

Best wishes
David
