Hi my name is Pete Chapman from Plymouth, Devon UK.

My Granfather, Albert Alfred Hayling served in 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, and was at Omdurman in the Sudan, for which he received the Queens Sudan and the Khedives Sudan with clasp Khartoum.

During the Boer War he received he received the QSA with bars Belfast, Laings Nek and Defence of Ladysmith, and the KSA with bars 1901 and 1902.

He also later received "Pip, Squeak and Wilfred" for service during the 1914-18 war, although by then he had now transferred to the Royal Engineers.

Many years ago, I had all of his medals, but unfortunately lost them in one of my many moves, but am now trying to put together a representative display of his medals.

unfortunately though I can only do this by the use of 'Museum quality' reproductions ( I know..........shame on me :( )as the purchase of the real items is way out of my budget, and anyway they wouldn't be HIS medals.

One question I have, can somebody please tell me in which order the clasps for the QSA are worn ? I take it that it is the earliest received at the bottom, but would be appreciate if somebody could confirm that for me please.

I'm also interested in the battles that my Grandfather was involved in and how those places are today, and this site is a fantastic resource. Well done. and thanks.

Hello Pete,
and welcome to the forum.
It is a great shame that your Grandfathers medals have gone missing, they sound like a really nice group, hope they turn up some day.
Your question about order of how the clasps are worn can be found in the below link

Good luck with your further research.

I echo Pauls thoughts and I can only add with regards to those medals, a rather expensive group too, these days!

Petec,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your kind comments.

I can only echo what Frank and Paul have already said and hope the medals one day resurface. They represent many years of service across the world and deserve respect and admiration.

With best wishes
David
