Hi, Am about to start researching my great grandfather and his part in the Boer War. I have two of his medals from the war and would like to investigate where he fought and when.

His name was J E Squires and his force number was 4712. He was with the Grenadier Guards

Any information would be gladly welcomed.

Hi Jill,

Your great grandfather's service papers are held at the National Archives so they are available there (where a researcher could copy them for you) or on-line via FindMyPast. The papers will give you quite a bit of biographical information, where he served etc.

Good luck!

Jill,

From the medal rolls, he served in the 2nd Grenadier Guards. Their time in South Africa is recounted here: www.angloboerwar.com/imperial-units/558-grenadier-guards

Best wishes
David
