VC.pdf
Just found this site and thought it might be a good starting place for some research I am doing.

I have a medal that was said to be bestowed upon my great grandmother who was a nurse in the Boer War. However, in researching this I can no medal that looks like it on your web site or any other. I have attached photos of front and back here (hope they come out clear enough) and wonder if anyone out there has seen anything like it before and would have information on it. All our family has is an oral history and this medal and photos of her wearing it. Thank you, A. P.

Attaching a PDF with additional information - regarding the inscribed letters.

Needed to try attaching it again as exceeding the limit. Once again!

Back side of cross - the engraved letters are: V
D. E. I (or T ot P) - R. E. G.
E. D.

Front Side of Cross – Note crown is different than other models found online and the lion is a bit raised off the cross. Example of one below – note how different the crown is. Under the crown it says ‘ For Valour.’

Hi A.P.
And a warm welcome to the forum.
Sounds like an interesting research project for you.
Sorry I do not recognise the medal but there are lots more knowledgable members here who may be able to help.
Good luck with your further research.

Paul :)

Hi,

I think I have had contact with your family about this lady and have seen a newspaper clipping following her death? I have also seen these photographs before. No nurse has ever been awarded the VC which this medal is a crude copy of, and there are no other nursing medals of this type and For Valour. There are other irregularities in the story in the newspaper and the oral histories. I am happy to forward you the response I made if you would like. To the best of my knowledge Molly (Mary) Rutherford was not a nurse in the Boer War.

cheers
