Good day everyone.

I am a new member here -- my great-uncle fought in the second Anglo-Boer war and was (according to family legend) an amazingly poor correspondent. His mother believed that he had died or been wounded, and so my grandfather enlisted in the SAC to come to South Africa to search for him. Again, according to the legend, their ships passed at sea, uncle returning to England to be discharged. I found his name on this site: William Doo, 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards.

I wondered if anyone could offer advice on how to find out more about the records either of the brothers, but preferably about my grandfather, Bertie Doo. I know that his first "home" leave to England was in 1906, when he married my grandmother, Alice Maud (nee Morgan) without permission from his commanding officer. At that time he was stationed (I believe) in Middelberg, Transvaal.

4266 William H G Doo has three enteries on the QSA medal rolls in WO100, in respect of has QSA and clasps Cape Colony , Orange Free State, Transvaal,South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, this is available to you on line at Ancestry, any service papers that have survived are found in WO96/97 and most, but not all, are available to you on line at Find My Past, or may be found in WO363/364 which are available on line at Ancestry.
All the original War Office papers refered to are to be found at TNA Kew.
The papers for the SAC are in South Africa, I had a brief look at WO100, but could not see a Doo, only a couple of Dow, if you want a check made for your grandfather, I would contact Audrey Portman [email protected]

With regard to SAC papers being in South Africa - can you tell me which archives (or location) holds them?

I had a request for information from a young fellow at my work, whose grandfather served with the SAC - F A Raven. I have his QSA rolls, which shows previous service with the SALH. The family have his QSA/KSA both named to SAC. They are only recent migrants to New Zealand, and they have family still in SA, so I was thinking they could visit the relevant archive?

Additonally, are SALH records held in SA as well?

My next course of action is to contact Audrey Portman, but I thought I'd check where these files are first.

I would say speak to Audrey on the subject of all SAC related matters, I am in Great Britain, so the SADF Documentation Centre Pretoria is a bit far for me to go.
Surviving SALH attestation papers are in WO126/130-138 at the TNA Kew.

A,B and C Division's papers are held in Pretoria while E Division are in Bloemfontein.

Audrey Portman is able to copy theses for you.
