Hi, this is my first post.
From photographs we have found a relative with the surname Nickolls, probably John Bardwell Nickolls, which show that he served with the 6th Dragoon Inniskilling. One photo shows the QSA medal bar . We have not been able to find his details on any records thus far. Any suggestions/assistance would be most welcome. John Bardwell Nickolls was born in 1870, Barnet, Herts.
Tried to attach photo but without success - even at 111kb.
Regards
Roy

Roy,

He appears in the medal rolls as J and J H Nickolls:

The medal rolls give his number as 4147.

A man with this surname and number is listed as having service papers. The only problem is that is year of birth is somewhat at variance with the date you have. The papers are available either on-line at FindMyPast or via a researcher at the National Archives and would be worth a look:

Best wishes

Hello Roy,

Not only is the birth year at variance so is the middle name.

The picture you've posted confuses me - the surround is undoutedbly Boer War era but the tunic is more WWI and it appears he has two pips on his epaulette - indicating officer rank?

Thanks Meurig,
Very interesting I will have top dig a bit deeper. I had perviously found John Henry and as you say this is not him. We had a John Henry but at that time he would have been around 10 years old.
Kind Regards
Roy
