Hello again Adrian, Bernard Vivian Fitzgibbon is the right guy and thank you. I have now seen his details in the ancient hand written ledger. There is no doubt where he was 23-1-00. I believe he arrived in PE halfway through 1886 en route from Ireland probably traveling through Southampton. It will be interesting to see what they have in Kew. Thanks again, Liam

Liam,

You might be interested in the medal roll entries too.

Brabant's Horse roll (WO100/237p196) has an entry for 1192 Trooper B V Fitzgibbon with the three clasps Belfast, Cape Colony and Wittebergen. A note says he was discharged 15 Oct 00. A further note says the entry was deleted off the Brabant's Horse roll as he later served in the PAVG MI with the number 1544. There is a further note which has been crossed through.

This is the central section:

It looks to me like 1544 Sqn G F Column (Gorringe's Flying Column).

The PAVG MI entry (WO100/264p15) has 1544 Pte with the clasp CC. A circular reference says "Delete Medal and CC clasp off this roll. Issued off 2nd Bra Horse as 1191" [sic].

There's only one FitzGibbon on the GFC roll, with initial R, with previous service in the Kaffrarian Rifles and Brabant's Horse (No 21051), so much later.

There are no attestation papers for the PAVG MI at the NA but there is a nominal roll. Sadly, he's not listed: www.angloboerwar.com/south-african-units...ted-infantry?start=1

Interesting!

Hello David,

I am extremely interested in the medal roll entries but unfortunately I am having difficulty navigating my way to the medal roll entries you refer to. I would like to see the actual entries if it were possible. I have already seen the muster book with Bernard Vivian's enlistment/discharge details re: 2nd Brabant's. Apologies for my poor navigating.
Using a website called "Find my Past" I found that he was a Private in a Unit: Mounted Infantry Prince Alfred's Volunteer Guard where you already noted he later served after discharge from 2nd Brabant's. His soldier number in this instance is quoted as 1542. This leaves me puzzled as you quote the PAVG MI number as 2046. but then note "1544" Sqn GF Column. Could he have served in several units do you think. Liam

Liam,

There are only a few medal rolls on my site. The ones I check are either at the NA on the Ancestry site.

I am a little confused by that 2046 number. His number for the PAVG MI is 1544. I have double checked the references to GFC, Kaffrarian Rifles and Brabant's Horse and think these relate to R Fitzgibbon.

He's listed below BV in the medal roll:
