Hi,
My name is Liam O'Carroll. I am a retired dentist and live in Dublin Ireland. My wife and I enjoy visiting SA. I am doing some research for a South African friend who is trying to trace his Irish grandfather who fought in the Boer War. His surname was Fitzgibbon and he was a Trooper in the 2nd Brabants. I am trying to establish if there is an archive in existence in SA that might contain the names of his Irish next of kin.

Hello Liam,

I think that the Attestation Papers to the 2nd Brabants Horse are in Kew in the UK.I have not come across anything to them here in SA.
These would show NOK etc.

Liam,

I have had a look at the nominal roll for the 2nd Brabants Horse.

There are two men with the surname Fitzgibbon listed:

1) 1192 Tpr Bernard Vivian Fitzgibbon, enlisted in Port Elizabeth on the 23/01/1900 and discharged on the 15/10/1900 in Pretoria.

2) 21051 Tpr Robert Fitzgibbon, enlisted in East London on the 02/11/1900 and discharged on the 03/01/1901.

Kyooma,

Adrian is absolutely right. The attestation papers for Brabant's Horse are held at the National Archives, in WO126/6-14.

A researcher there would be able to search them for you.

Good luck!
