Hello

I am hoping to find a map/maps that my husband and I can use to trace the battle route from Belmont to Kimberley. We want to do the tour on a Royal Enfield motorcycle, on the dates on which the battles occurred. We would also be grateful for pointers to lesser-known landmarks.

Kind regards

Mandy

Mandy,

That sounds a great idea! Not sure about the mode of transport though!?

In terms of maps, there are quite a few locally produced maps and guides that are very useful and a real help when trying to find some of the less frequently visited places.

For where you plan to go I would also recommend the book called 'Battleground South Africa: Kimberley: Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein' by Lewis Childs which combines hoistorical accounts with modern day directions. It is light enough to carry with you and cost les than £2 from Naval and Military Press .

When you come back, can your relate the story of your journey?

Regards
David

Thank you David, I have ordered the book that you recommended! If it is not too much trouble, could you please tell me which company publishes, or where I can find, the locally produced maps?

I actually attempted this trip (by car!) in the late 80s, armed only with a battered copy of Packenham (sp?) and I remember trekking across farm land in search of a lone grave - whose, I do not recall - and not finding it. Any idea who may have been buried away from his men and why?

I also remember finding a small cemetery covered in what appeared to be Scottish thistles but, again, memory fades with time and I do not remember exactly where it was.

I will share pictures of this trip with pleasure and would like to extend the invitation to join us to those enthusiasts who are willing and able to travel on slow motorcycles ;)

Kind regards

Mandy
