Hello everyone, I'm very new to posting on message boards so please forgive me if I do go wrong.
I am the wife of an ex cheshire and after so many years with the regiment (24 in total) we both have an interest in the regimental history.
My husband collects memorabilia and about 10 years ago I came across a very old photograph of 1 cheshire signal platoon 1907 and my hubby being part of the signal platoon in the cheshire's I snapped it up.
The men on it have the bulls eye lamps and the signalling flags and they all look very interesting people indeed. As I am very sure most of these would have very possibly been in the boar war I am posting to see if there is anyone on here who can give me any advice on how I can find out who these men are. We've tried the regimental archives to no avail as the records don't record who was in the platoon. So if anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciated. Thank you

Maxii,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your first post.

Your question is one of the most asked and, unfortunately, the answer is usually the same and always disappointing. For pictures of officers, photographs are sometimes named or the men can be identified from other sources. Where there are photographs of NCOs and men which were not named at the time, it is very difficult to identify anyone in the picture.

We have all been there and share your frustration at this.

Sorry not to be more positive

Thank you so much for your reply.

It is extremely disappointing that there is no information on these men, but as its over 100 years ago now I suppose it is only to be expected.
It would have been so interesting to find out what had happened and what they experienced in their careers.
I suppose this is a reason why I have made sure that all the pictures of my husband in his regiment have behind the backing board a small breakdown on who is in the picture, the date it was taken and a brief career history of his service, postings, medals and tours.
Just in case in 100 years time someone else is looking for the same thing.

Thank you again.

Hello Maxii
And a warm welcome to the forum.
I echo Davids words with reference to photographs and postcards, if only names were written!
Well done in detailing your own pictures, very helpful for the future.
Good luck in any further research.

Paul :)

Maxii, what an excellent idea! I do wish my late parents had done that as, following their deaths, I was left with a cache of WW1 and 11 photos, but no indication of who is whom in the pictures. As both sides of the family fought with either the DLI or REs, it is very difficult to unravel >:(
