Hi, my great grandfather, Pte JT Baston, was in the Royal Artillary and fought in the Anglo-Boer war in the 63rd batt. RFA and A batt. RHA in 1899 and 1900 He married in 1897 and had two children, the first in 1898 and the second, my grandmother, in 1904.

He was posted to SA again in 1905 until 1907. My question is, on this second posting after the war would his wife and children gone with him or would they stay at home?

Thanks

John

John,

Welcome to the site and thank you for your post.

My understanding is that wives and children would not accompany men posted overseas so I think he would have travelled there alone.

Hello John

As an amateur geneaologist, I am guessing that you want to know if your grandmother emigrated/spent time in S.A.?

If this is the case, I suggest that you look at emigration records in the U.K. or contact the Department of Internal Affairs in Pretoria/Tshwane - although I would not count too much on the results, as they had no record of me being in the country until 1984, despite me having emigrated with my parents in 1969!

I do agree with David, it is highly unlikely that she came out with your grandfather, as only high-ranking naval officers had the priviledge of travelling with their wives or families.

If you have more information about your GM and need records checked in S.A., I will be happy to do what I can.

Kind regards

Mandy

Hello John,
Much depended on the mans regt/corps I would say very unlikely in the case of the artillery, but, here, on this forum, last week, I found myself looking at a man in the Army Hospital Corps whose wife did go overseas and whose children were all "born in barracks" including a daugther actually born in Egypt.
