Awww too bad Mike, that would have been exciting! My Wests were born Arlesey as far as I know and then my direct line moved to Hampstead, so they born there. my grandfather Benjamin though, when he married, lived in Edgware Middlesex.

Frank, I was just re-looking at the images you sent me of my Frank West and his medal cards and realized, that with it saying Mafeking 15th July 1901, this is the proof that Frank was definitely there. I guess it did not sink in before when I saw your images. Maybe I could not find him or his regiment written the whereabouts as they were in with the 4th Bn. sigh, I need to be more careful with what I am reading, save me a lot of hunting LOL. :silly:

I did notice though, another card issued for the QSA medal for a Frank West, with the 2nd Beds, but has a different regiment number, so even if a man with same name in same regiment, the number would have been totally different right? The officer writing things down would not make a mistake in the numbers?

Thank you for your time and help Frank.

Dear avacuppa,

From the medals rolls Frank provided, I see that he was 2nd Battalion attached to 4th Battalion. The 4th Battalion were indeed based out of Mafeking - please see below.

Best wishes,

Justin

Justin, I am sorry to bother you. I am writing up my Frank West's Biography for myself and cannot read the name at the bottom of page 287. I want it to be Lord Boulton, but is it?

I don't mean to nit pick I just want to be right, and Lord Boulton's name is on my Frank West's roll of individuals getting the south africa medal 1st April 1901.

This is what I have in my Bio. does this sound about right to you?

On June 11th 1900, Frank was in South Africa with the 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. At this date, Frank would have been in Stage two of the war.

June 26,1900, the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment was attached to the 4th Battalion and proceeded to Mafeking on August 1st and formed a Mounted Infantry Company. During the greater part of 1901 the Bn, was attached to Lord ? Company.

By September 1st 1900, the Transvaal was annexed by Great Britain.

On the 15th of July 1901, Frank, with the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, attached to the 4th Bn, were in Mafeking as stated on the Roll of individuals entitled to the South Africa medal and clasps signed Major C.P. Boulton Commander of the 4th Bn.

Early in 1901 the British, under Lord Kitchener's command, encamped at Naauwpoort with 1500 soldiers. Commander of this camp was General H.G.Dixon.

Thank you so much for your help Justin, and thank you so much for your books. I had never thought to look for books, well would not have known what to look for anyways, I just kept looking on the 'net and not finding what I wanted, proof of Frank being in Mafeking for real, even though he himself had said that, and you gave that to me with these books. Thankyou
