Wanting to say hello to everyone,

I have recently joined and finding this site very interesting and informative. I live in Hamilton Ontario Canada, but born in Edgware England. We have four beautiful children, am passionate about doing my family tree, enjoy reading, mysteries mostly and right now, not working. :)

Actually, I was wondering if anyone knows if there was a second relief column come to help out at Mafeking after the first relief? That my Frank West could have been in maybe.

My Frank West of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment was in the Boer War, 1900-1903. He states he got the disease at Mafeking, in March of 02 but saw the doctor in December of 02. Frank saw the doctor at Naauwpoort.

Frank West was in S.A. in June of 1900 to Jan of 1903 when he was discharged as medically unfit. Therefore too late to have beeni n the Siege of Mafeking or the Relief of Mafeking.

Frank got the Kings S.A. medal with clasps and the Queens S.A. medal. Would be a lovely if a family member out there still had those medals, and I could see them. :)

Thank you for your time. xo

Good morning, welcome to this forum,
Mafeking really was a great Victorian epic, the term "Having a Mafeking" was and indeed still is used in my family to describe a good night out, to answer your initial question, there were two relief columns, one came down from Rhodesia and another headed north out of Kimberley.
I assume that Frank West was actually 6561 Pte West, his QSA/KSA were issued from WO100/176 and WO100/325 pages 393 and 93, he did not take part in the operations to relieve Mafeking.
Again, welcome and good luck with your family research,
Kind regards Frank

Welcome avacuppa,

I agree with the sentiments of your username and write with a cup of Lady Grey team by my side.

As Frank alludes, men were stationed in Madefing after the siege and I thing Frank West was one of them.

Good luck with your research

Thank you Frank,

Yes that is my Frank West 6561. I wondered about the dates, there is a lot on the 'net for the relief and siege of, but I couldn't figure out about afterwards to make sure he really was in Mafeking.

Also, thank you for the welcome!
