Hi
My interest is largely personal. A close family friend when I was growing up in Zimbabwe was Mr Arthur Hume who used to say he had been a scout for the British and often started his stories with 'I told them there were Boers in those hills" Sadly I seldom listened. My grandmothers cousin was R.H Henderson mayor of Kimberley during the siege and my grandfather Charles Stephenson rode with the Kimberley Light Horse.

My missing information is to do with my grandfathers cousin Charles Applewhite who came from Lincolnshire. I know he survived the Boer war and returned to farming but I can't find any trace of him in any list. Has anyone any tips about where else I might look?

Good morning, welcome to this forum,
Applewhite is not a very common name, just to tantalize, there was a 5336 Pte C Applewhite, who was in the 2nd Lincolnshire Regt during the Anglo Boer War, so without knowing anymore details, that is all I can say.
Of course if you have reason to believe that he was indeed your grandfathers cousin, you should check WO97, WO363 and WO364 at the TNA Kew to see if any service papers have survived.
Again, welcome and good luck with any future research,
Regards Frank

Morning

The service papers are on-line at Findmypast.co.uk and ancestry.com - they can be searched for free.

I couldn't find papers for a Charles Applewhite.

Hi Meurig and Frank

Thank you for your help. I am sure that will be 'my' Charles Applewhite as all the other Lincolnshire Applewhites were accounted for in the 1901 census and he was the only one that we know went to the Boer war. I understand he didn't have a great time and once back in Lincoln never left the farm again.

This is a wonderful site and so interesting.
