Greetings all,

Tired of big city life, I have retreated to the small village of Lake Chrissie on the Mpumalanga highveld, some 100km from Swaziland. I chose this village because of its interesting history. Sadly, not much is known about its history other than scant detail and lots of fiction and supposition.

I am researching the battle at Lake Chrissie in what was then Eastern Transvaal, now Mpumalanga, South Africa.

note: battle AT, not OF Lake Chrissie. Not much is known about the battle, which is absurd. The results of the battle helped extend the duration of the war. In attempting to hold the Boers in the Eastern Transvaal, Lord French and Major General Smith-Dorrien were about to spring a trap. Unfortunately for them, General Botha got wind of their plan and attacked Smith-Dorrien while he was encamped at Lake Chrissie. A fierce battle ensued with many casualties (exact number unknown), one Victoria Cross being granted.

I am attempting to gather as much information as is possible about the battle, and events preceding and just after the event for the sake of preserving our local history.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Mike!

Reading some of the posts here, I realized that many members were truly helpful. I just didn't realize how helpful.

Many, many thanks indeed.

As far as the Fuzzy goes, I don't know what it may mean in Canada, but here it refers to my beard. Large guy with beard- Fuzzybear!

Fuzzybear,

Can I extend my welcome to the forum too?

If you enter Chrissie in the search box at the top of the screen, you will see about 17 references in the site that may provide more information.

Good luck with your research!

Hi David,

Many thanks for the suggestion.

I did that first, before asking, as I didn't want to waste anyone's time.
But thanks for the interest and the welcome.
