What determines when a soldier gets the Queens South Africa or the Kings South Africa?

For my McHarrie, Isaac #2827: he is entitled to an India medal with Hazara 1888, & Hazara 1891, & Relief of Chitral 1895.

What does that medal look like?

His Boer War participation entitles the South Africa medal and Clasps; 1899-1902; the SA 1901 clasp; along with 5 campaign/battle clasps. How does one know if this is a QSA or a KSA?

The x2 Hazara clasps were on the India General Service medal (campaigns 1854-1895) and a lovely medal and the Relief of Chitral clasp was on the later India medal (for campaigns 1895-1902). Thus, two medals for service in India and I reckon he would have earned them. Of course, the 5 "campaign/battle clasps" (and the one dated 1901) were on his QSA. An entitlement of three lovely medals. If you access a favourite research site on the internet, I am sure you will easily find illustrations.

I used to own a group to the Seaforths with a similar clasp combination. Not quite the same as Isaac's but it does show how the two India medals and the QSA would look together.
