Good morning, all (it always seems to be morning),

Another medal-in-the-mail; this time it's:

J E Smith
Royal Navy
HMS Forte

Where does one find the service records for Navy personnel?

Thanks for any direction.

George

Hello George,
The bulk of what you need is at the TNA Kew in ADM188.
Regards Frank

Hello George,
I checked the "Forte's" roll in ADM177/53, there are actually two men of that name, a Carpenter and a Stoker, the Carpenters medal was sent to him on board Forte on the 15th of April 1904 and the Stoker had his sent to him at Pembroke on the 15th of November 1902.
Kind regards Frank

Frank,

Thanks, this will/might make my future search a bit simpler. 'Findmypast' has three J E Smiths on the HMS Forte. The third is a cooper. There doesn't seem to be a military record as I've seen for the ground forces...or am I not looking in the right place?

I'm trying to not seem like I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, but this is all quite new to me.

My regards (bowing and scraping),

George

George,
For this particular period you should consult ADM188 at The National Archives at Kew in London, take time to look at their site or contact them directly.
