Hello Kelly

Have you tried for service papers on findmypast.co.uk or ancestry.com - searching is free.

He could also be a volunteer rifle unit who typically wore dark green uniforms.

You could also try posting on www.victorianwars.com - there are lots of very good uniform folk there.

Could the insignia of his lower arm give any sort of information?

Thanks, Kelly

Hello Kelly

The "insignia" on his lower arm is for want of a better word "decoration", but it is typical of volunteer units at the time of the Anglo-Boer War. The regular army had stopped using such "frills" on the sleeves.

Kelly,

It might be worth centring your search on Ilford. I don't know which Volunteer Battalions would have had an Ilford Company but the Essex Regiment perhaps?

Best,

Justin

Hello Meurig, thank you for your help, i will look into the Volunteers that were involved in the War. Thank you

Hello Justin, thank you, i have had a look for some Essex Regiments and have come across a few but unsure if they were Volunteers. A promising one is the 1st Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment, but so far no luck in confirming.

Thank you both for your help

Kelly
