My name is Hilary and my interest is family history. I am trying to work out how my man George Boughtwood a lance sergeant attached to the 12th Lancers. I think he was a military policeman: was in Ireland in 1901 but also managed to collect the full house of medals. All explanations welcome.

Hi Hilary,

Welcome to the forum!

The medal rolls show 3240 Lance Sergeant G Boughtwood serving with the 12th Lancers and earning the clasp CC on WO100/117p8. A note says he was serving with the 'Provl Regiment of Lancers'. Several people on the roll have the same note. I am not sure what this means. Perhaps Provincial or Provisional?

On the Supplementary Roll (WO100/117p75) he is shown with clasps OFS, Transvaal and the date clasps SA01 and SA02. There is note by his name. The first note says 'To Army Reserve'. This has been crossed out and replaced with 'TE' (Time expired).

This means he earned one medal for his time in South Africa, the QSA with 5 clasps, CC, OFS, Tr, SA01 & SA02.

There is some information on the 12th Lancers here: www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...waless-royal-lancers

Best wishes

Hilary,

If you don't already have them, you'll be pleased to hear that his service papers have survived.

BOUGHTWOOD George Walter Born 1872 London, Middlesex WO97 Chelsea

These are available online at FindMyPast or at the National Archives.

Best wishes
David
