Hi all,

My name is Nick & I am the great grandson of 11998 Trooper James Ide, 65th (Leicestershire) Company, 17th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. I have a fairly extensive amount of research on him and his unit from several visits to Kew, but there's always more to find out....

I hadn't visited this website for a while, but noticed it now has a forum! Several members look familiar from another forum that I participate in, and they'll notice my avatar is similar between the two. I've made the avatar here a combination of my submarine dolphins from the other forum (for branding consistency) and the cap badge of the 65th LIY - more appropriate for this forum.

I look forward to the discussions here and hopefully being able to share some information.

Best regards,
Nick

Nick,

I was researching the silver hip flask of Trooper Gill, Leicestershire IY and came across this good account of their swearing in which might interest you.

Best wishes,

Justin

Thanks Justin,

Can I ask what newspaper this came from, and also the date of the paper? Judging by the names of the officers, this account appears to relate to the swearing in of Leicester's first IY company: 7th Squadron, 4th Battalion. I'll respond in your other thread regarding Gill.

Best regards,
Nick

Nick,

Thanks. My apologies - it was remiss of me not to include the reference!

It's the 13th January 1900 edition of the 'Grantham Journal'

Best wishes,

Justin

Nick,

Here's an account of the departure of your great-grandfather's company, from the 'Leicester Chronicle', 7 April 1900.

Did he return with the Company or stay in South Africa?

Best wishes,

Justin
