Justin,

You've just proven my comment in my first post in this thread :) . I hadn't seen that article! I spent some time at the Newspaper Library in Colindale back in 2008 and found articles in the Leicester Mercury from March 1st (formation of 65th Company) and April 9th (send-off at Southampton). I hadn't looked at the Leicester Chronicle!

My Great-grandfather returned from South Africa probably before ever seeing a hostile Boer. He was one of several members of 65th Company struck down by malaria during the transit inland from Beira to Maraponda, so was invalided home early with just the single clasp Rhodesia on his QSA. He spent about a month recovering in the hospital at Netley in late 1900 before being discharged as medically unfit in Dec-1900.

I've put some brief details on him as well as 65th Company in general here .

OK, found the article on FindMyPast. Looks like the two newspapers were combined for some time? I'm having vague recollections that perhaps one was the daily and then they combined for the Saturday paper.

It looks like there are a lot of other articles in the Chronicle during 1900 re the LIY that I'm going to have to sift through as well.

Thanks again Justin for pointing me to some fresh research leads!

Two and a half hours yesterday yielded no less than eleven articles of interest in the Leicester Chronicle, so a big thanks to Justin for pointing that out. Probably the most interesting was a detailed account of the circumstances of death and funeral of Sergeant Cockain of the 1st contingent 65th Company who had been invalided home ill, and subsequently died of a relapse of fever.

I won't mention Justin's name to the missus since that was 2 1/2 hours I was supposed to be working on the "honey do" list, so I'm also in a bit of hot water!

Thanks again,

Nick,
LOL at "honey do list" I know exactly what you mean!
Well done and good luck with your continued research.

Cheers
Paul :)

Nick,

Many thanks for that!

Perhaps you should give the supreme commander a bunch of lilies, as per the account of the Leicestershire IY farewell banquet you will have found yesterday in the Chronicle and which explains their cap badge and your avatar!

Extract below for others.

All the best,

Justin
