Hello, My name is Mike Fox. I'm aware that my Grandfather, Pte A Fox, 3888 a soldier of the Gloucester Regiment was at the Siege/Defence of Ladysmith. I have his SA medal and appropriate clasp. His military history record informs me he arrived in SA on the 24/09/1899. Leaving on the 23/08/1900. I've read numerous records and checked-out maps regards the Siege/Defence of Ladysmith, but, can't find any reference to the location within Ladysmith of where the Glosters where located? Plus, what part they "played" during that time? I'm planning to visit Ladysmith and the area during 2014. Whilst there I would dearly like to stand in a named area where my Grandfather was during his time there. Any and all appropriate information would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mike Fox.

Hi Mike and welcome,

I trust you have visited the Regimental Museum website:

www.glosters.org.uk/

I haven't seen it myself, but they hold a Diary of the Siege of Ladysmith, during the Boer War. Written by 2409 Corporal James Charles Cowland. 1st Battalion.
They will also have a copy of the Regimental Diary; both should be useful.

I strongly suggest that you get in touch with the museum as I'm sure they can help you, but maybe there is someone on the Forum who can offer you more from their personal knowledge.

Regards

Ian

Hello Ian and Thanks. Yes, I've visited the www.glosters.org.uk/ website on numerous occasions in an attempt to discover what was the "Glosters" involvement during the time of the siege/defence of Ladysmith. Very little can be gleaned. Therefore, I'm planning a visit to the museum. Hopefully, I can dot a few i's and cross a few t's. Thankfully, I don't live too far away from Gloucester. Thanks again. Mike.
