Hi, as mentioned in my "hello" posting, i am trying to research a 3rd type QSA medal that has been handed down to me from my recently departed uncle.

My uncle served in the Lancashire Fusiliers then laterly in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, so how this QSA came into his posession i simply have no idea.

I have shown the QSA to a friend of mine who is a militaria collector, and he thought it could be "special", and he strongly encouraged me to try and research the medal.

So, the following is the only info i have on this QSA:

250 Pte. C.F. Crowther. Windsorton-Wedberg T.G.

Now, my friend tell's me that:

250 is the persons serial number.
He was a Private named CF Crowther.
He belonged to the Windsorton-Wedberg Town gaurd.

I have looked through the listings on this site, there is indeed a C.F. Crowther. Windsorton-Wedberg T.G.

BUT..

The name is spelled incorrectly, either on the medal, or in official records..

The listed name is spelled as: CF Crouther..?

Could/ do such oversights happen..??
If so, how/why would this oversight occur..??

Can i please ask, all those of you with infinatly more knowledge in these matters than i, for your help and guidance..

My deepest gratitude in advance for your help.

regards.
Lee.

Welcome Lee......

Yes you do have a very special QSA there with only 74 being issued to that Town Guard.....

Yes miss spellings in the names happen more often than you think.....

The Crowther when written in the style of the time could look like Crouther, and vice versa....

Hello mike and thank you for the welcome and fast reply :)

Only 74 QSA's were issued to the TG.. WOW.. Is there any way i could find out more about this unit..? number of troops, action's seen.. dates.. anything at all..??

I know before i ask you, that my next question is a "how long is a piece of string" style question, but, here goes..

How could my uncle, a Lancashire Lad, born and bred, come to have this QSA in his possesion, and esecially a QSA of such low issue..??

Best regards.
Lee.

Charles Forster Crowther appears to have served in both the Special Cape Police Contingent as number 102 and in Warwicks Scouts as number 21, he has entries in their rolls in WO100/240 and WO100/278 as well as WO100/286, as you would expect.

Hi Lee

The Town Guards were local units raised in towns that feared attack from the Boers. There were about 200 different little locsl defence units, formed from civilians. Most served part time doing guard duty or relieving regular troops of local patrols etc.

They ranged in size from about 5 men to a 1000 men. Some saw some action if attacked or besieged. Generally they were civilians and not meant for seriuos fighting. They would generally have got the medal if 'called out' to investigate Boers in the area. Sometimes there coukd be a skirmish but not often.

The interesting thing is that you can research the town, as you know wxactly where it is abd there is usually a history and local newspaper.

Good luck
Ryan
