Hi Dave
You're right this (Syndney Mayes - and yes always spelt that way with a Y by his family) is a totally different person to the one Don is looking for. He used to be the barman and then the landlord at the Three Horsehoes in Toftwood.
Don's relative lived in South Africa after serving there in the RAMC. He then married over there and also died there in 1962. If my records are correct and I've just been doing that by cross-referencing everything tonight - Sidney Stephen Mayes had a lot of children all born in South Africa.
Interested in anything to do with East Dereham, Norfolk UK. - 3rdVBNR, 5th Norfolks, RAMC etc. Including soldiers from out of town who were stationed in town during a war period.
Worked as trained researcher.
Personal - married to Kenny (42y), mother of 3, nanny of 5 and owner of Percy, the Westie....

Hi Kitty/Don
Looking at the 1911 census, is it possible that Else Mayes was Sidney's 1st wife?
Place of birth Old Meldrum Aberdeen Scotland.
With regard to Sidney's father Walter. His 1st wife Elvina..nee Greaves died in 1900.
So Eliza may have been his second wife. She passed away in 1940.

Looking forward to Kitty's findings regarding Sidney's siblings.

PS.... I wonder who Archibald Loy's father was ?
Dave.....
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Don
Just got a few more facts on his children to collect and then all the stuff will be ready for you. It's looking very interesting so far with a few weird facts turning up - hence I'm doing another check on them. I've also got a clearer copy of the 1911 census for you too and I can explain it all as well. One of the enumerators who took the Dereham census records in 1911 made several mistakes on the forms so I've got use to transcribing them - that's what 40+ years of town research leads to - as they say practice makes perfect - though I doubt I'll ever be the latter as I've still got loads to learn thankfully.
thanks and take care, Kitty.
