More specifically Mayes was in F (East Dereham) Coy, 3 Volunteer Bn, Norfolk Regt.

Dereahm based historian, Kitty Lynn (kitty55 on this site) may be able to give you more information.

Hi Don
I noticed on Sidney's attestation papers, his next of kin was his father Walter.
I have attached a few possibilities for your research.
Sidney's mother may have been Elvina Greaves?.

Possible G G marriage certificate.

Possible S A connection?

Hi Don
The census was for 1891.
Registration District. Mitford.
Address recorded was 23 Toftwood, Westfield Lane, East Dereham, Norfolk.

Also, there is a 1911 census which records a Sydney Mayes who was a part time farm labourer and a publican of the Horseshoe Inn at East Dereham.
He was married to Florence and had 2 children Sydney Frederick and Nellie Florence Mayes.
Not sure if this is your man?

Hi Don
1911 census for Sidney's Father and interestingly, looks like 3 of Sidney's children are living with their Mother and Grandparents.
Note the place of birth pertaining to the 3 children
.

Ps...Above address was The Coopers Cottages South Green, East Dereham.

PPS ..I think the birthplace for the children reads Booysens? Suburb of Jo Burg in the province of Gauteng, South Africa.

Best regards,
