Richard Valentine Ashe . I have 3 references to him
Lieut R V Ashe No. 317 . 107th Co. 6th Bn Imperial Yeomanry 25/9/99 - 16/10/00
His Medal record sites his No. 317 and says he is late pte. of the Imperial Light Horse. This medal record says he served at Relief of Mafeking,Orange Free State and Transvaal.

Imperial Light Horse roll call has him (Richard Valentine Ashe) enlisting at PMB 25/9/99 and discharged 12/10/00 with the rank of Trooper.No. 317 in the 1st Regiment.

Can anyone cast light on what this means please. Are there other records on his service, as the records say he stayed on in S A and I think he was involved with the running of a Chinese compound at Krugersdorp in 1905.

Welcome back to this forum, I am a little confused by your qustion, what does it mean? it means exactly that, just what you have said, PMB was Pietermaritzburg, moreover, Ashe was one of the original "fighting five hundred"
Both WO100/356 and WO127 confirms his service with the 1st Imperial Light Horse and WO100/122 also confirms a good scarce QSA with five clasps, those that you mention and Elandslaagte and Defence of Ladysmith.
So he would be entitled to the QSA and KSA with both clasps, I think now, I would, if I were you, look in WO126/55-65 at Kew for his original Imperial Light Horse attestation and discharge paper and also check for any officers IY register for his service with the 6th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in WO129 whilst you are there, I wish you good luck, Ashe appears to have been a very interesting man and a bit of research would certainly be worth your while, it may well throw up a few surprises.

I thought this name sounded familiar. His medal has been on the market a few times (and a very nice medal it is too!).

He was discharged from the ILH on 12 Oct 00. Later Lt, 6th IY.

QSA (5), KSA (2). Glendining Feb 79 £260. Spink Jul 94 £280. Spink Dec 95 £315.

£260 in 1979 was quite a lot of money!

I recall there was a mini boom in the early 1980's?

I'm sure I have seen a picture of Ashe too. I will see if I can find it.
