I am new today to the site. My particular interest is Lt H C Malet 8th Hussars. He inititally enlisted into the Cape Mounted Rifles in 1873 as a Private and then for bravery and courage at the Siege of Wepener was one of four Corporals all commisionned as Lieutenants. Having gained his commission in the CMR he transferred to his family regiment of the 8th Hussars and went on to become Lt Col Sir Harry Charles St Lo Malet OBE DSO. His story is very much of a "man's man and a soldier's soldier". I have quite a lot of info and photographs of him etc and would love to hear from anyone who has info on this chap.

Hello Tony, I am the owner of a Holland and Holland shotgun, which has a wood and leather case. I have owned it for 30 years. I was cleaning the case today and decided to google the name edged into the leather on the top of the case, "H C Malet 8th Hussars". I came up with your post which I see was posted 6 years ago, so you may have moved on. However I thought I would respond and let you know that I have H C Malets gun case. Regards Paul Smith

Paul, thank you for your message - it is great to know that his shotgun is still active. As I have already posted, I know an awful lot about Harry Malet. He was certainly a keen sportsman, point to point, polo, shooting etc. I suppose H & H guns have unique numbers or marks, it would be nice to add that to my facts. Would you like a photograph of the man himself so you can see what sort of chap he was - if you want to you could contact me by email - [email protected]. Hope to hear from you.
