Hi all

Just wondering if there has ever been a thread on dealer ethics? I have been through the lists today and it is frustrating when dealers do not put details of missing medals, incorrect spellings etc. Is there any code for them out there, through the OMRS? I know they sometimes put some details and should not put anything knowingly incorrect, but shouldn't they have to put all of those details, its not difficult to find them?

Doug.

This topic is a minefield! I had a go at a dealer in our country on another site regards pricing and taking foreign visitors "for a ride"! It ends up getting messy and not worth the effort unfortunately.

Sometimes it is best to do the research first via records at Kew and confirm entitlement yourself and then go ahead with purchase, especially if it is an expensive group or you just do not collect broken groups etc. As for mis-spelt naming etc it is rather common for this to be overlooked and mistakes made when the medals were issued but should not stop the dealer from writing them up as they are.

Regards
Brian

Any dealer that I have dealt with has:

1. If anything is wrong or miss described has accepted the item back.....

2. Has put an item on hold and allowed you time to do some research on the item if you wish.....

3. Now I know I am going to get shot for this but it is one of the things that I like about ebay is that if correctly described and you can see pictures with a 7 of 10 day auction period it gives you some time to do some research and helps you decide about the purchase..... Also most now will accept a returned item.....

4. Dealers have to be able to rely on their reputations so any miss dealings will do anything to keep a good reputation....

That's my little rant.....

Doug,

There hasn't been a thread on dealers ethics and that's the way I would prefer it to be. This is not the place to air grievances with dealers and I will remove posts on that theme.

Dealers do sometimes get it wrong and in my experience will take action to remedy the problem. If any member has an issue with a particular dealer, the best course of action would be to raise the matter with them directly and, if the issue cannot be resolved, to raise it with the appropriate professional body, eg the OMRS, if possible.

Kind regards
David

The OMRS is not a professional body, and there is no point in contacting them about issues with dealers. Two journals ago there was a little note from the secretary saying that if you had an issue, sort it out with the dealer, don't ask the OMRS as they have no power.

They are a collectors group that produces a journal, not the medal police and they can't do anything to a dealer.

I always laugh when I see dealers quote their OMRS number on their site or eBay listings. It means nothing, they can't help or protect anyone, and that is not what they are actually there for.

Contact the consumer organisation in your country, as it is just a business and it should be dealt with the same as if you had an issue with the corner store.

To support David about commenting on dealers, I recently saw a forum (not medal related) shut down due to comments about dealers. The owner of the forum is responsible, at least in Australia, for the content, and got sued. So one person has a go at a dealer, they get offended, and it is game over.

I agree with both David and Rdarby.....

As stated in my reply it is the only way I have been able to deal with dealers....
