I am keen to find out more about my Grand mothers brother Private A Pugh.I do not know his first name or date of birth but I know he died of Typhoid Fever on December 6th 1902 in Middleburgh. He is remembered on our local (Huddersfield)Boar War Memorial as a "local man" but he was in the Shropshire Light Infantry- No 1936.Can anyone help? Ian Stevenson [email protected]

Good morning and welcome to this forum,
Arthur Pugh had originally joined the Militia in 1887, the 4th South Wales Borderers, but, joined the 3rd Shropshire Light Infantry in 1892, he served in South Africa with their 2nd Battalion.
He was, rather interestingly, injured in a railway accident in Frederickstad on the 30th of July 1900 and then died of enteric on the 6th of January 1902 at Middleburg, again, whilst serving with the 2nd Shropshire LI.
Two sets of original service papers have survived in WO96 at Kew, moreover, a brief look at the 2nd Battalions medal roll shows him as entitled to both the QSA and KSA, in addition, for the latter in WO100/338, a note "Deceased" so again, welcome and good luck with this man.
Kind regards Frank Kelley

Private A. Pugh is buried in Middelburgh cemetery. As well as Huddersfield, he is also commemorated on the King's Shropshire Light Infantry memorial in Shrewsbury.

Hi Frank,

Thanks. I haven't been collecting them systematically, just when I come across one.

I have photos of all the regimental/town memorials, and also many private ones, in Gildea's magnificent 'For Remembrance' (1911).

Best wishes,

Justin
