Hi I'm a history graduate and did my dissertation on CP Scott and the 1900 khaki election in Leigh Lancs. CP Scott was our MP and defending his seat. As editor of the Manchester Guardian he was very outspoken against the war. It was fascinating how he held his seat as the government capitalised on the success of the war.

ProBoer,

That sounds an interesting area of research, one man's stand against a tide of public support for the war. What do you think was the main reason for him retaining his seat?

The "Khaki" election of October 1900 is often spoken about; yet the voting pattern revealed that for every eight votes cast for the Government of the day, seven votes were cast against it. This interesting little snippet is from "The Boer War - A History" by Judd and Surridge ISBN 978 1 78076 191 4. The problem for the "opposition" was that it was comprised of several parties and could not seem to agree on major policy. In any case a conservative would point out that the liberals were tainted by a number of policy failures in years prior.
The closest thing I ever saw to a "khaki" election was the Federal poll in OZ during 1966. It was at the time of the escalation of the war in SVN and feelings on both sides ran high. I was in uniform at the time and recall that many termed that as the "khaki" election. However, it was not as passionate as that of October, 1900.
Doubtless, local issues counted more than foreign policy in some areas in 1900.
Regards
IL.

Hello. I am based in Cape Town and am researching family history. Your post regarding Thomas Craven Blundell was most interesting - my great grandfather.
