Well I have been loitering around for some time so thought I would post and introduce myself and my interest in the Boer War,

As with many of you it started with a mild interest in family history, in particular my maternal Grandfather, Charles Stenning Wollaston who joined up under age using the assumed name of Grainger (his step fathers name) he was in the Border Regiment, seeing action at Colenso, Spion Kop and the relief of a Ladysmith. He was eventually wounded in action during a skirmish at Middlefontein on the 23rd January 1901. That 'mild interest' has slowly become a passion for the Boer War and Military history!

At the moment I am trying to see if there is a family link with the Grainger of the Middlesex Regiment killed on a Spion Kop, as he came from Islington, North London, the same as my Grandfather!

I was fortunate to obtain my a Grandfathers army papers and have been able to pretty accurately pinpoint the Regiments movements during he conflict.

I retired from full time work eight years ago and to promote my interest in Battlefields and Military history I joined the Guild of Battlefield Guides and visited South Africa with a party of them in 2010 and followed some of my Grandfathers footsteps in various places and I hope to return in late 2014! I intend to spend more time at Middlefontein just wandering around trying to pin point where it all occurred!

Anyway I have rambled on as usual, best wishes,
Laters,
Scottie.

Hi Scottie,
And a warm welcome to the forum :)
Thank you for sharing your family history with us, very interesting.
Are you lucky enough to have your Grandfathers medals or photos, I am sure the forum would be most interesting in seeing them.
Good luck with any further research.

Cheers
Paul :)
