It is indeed!

I have been through the Long Tom pass but never saw the monument :( The next time I'm out that way I will make a point of checking it out.

Did you see the weight of a Long Tom? 6.25 Tonnes! That's heavy

The one with the short barrel, of course, was the one from Gun Hill

Hello Iain,
Yes, over six tonnes is indeed heavy, but, then so was the level of damage that it could inflict!
Really good photos you have posted and a real pleasure for me to see on here today, thats the thing about South Africa, just so vast!
Kind regards Frank

Hi Frank,

yes, according to the specs a Creusot could throw a shell 9 kms, thats equivalent to a Naval gun on a Battleship.

Glad you enjoyed the photos

kind regards, Iain

That brings back memories. In 2006 I drove pretty far just to see it, and also bought a wooden elephant from someone on the side of the road! I had a think about how lucky my life is when I considered how hard campaigning in that environment would have been without roads.

Apparently it was just a track when they hauled the gun through.

As I'm out and about, I frequently look at the countryside and imagine how easy, in a lot of the terrain, it would have been for the Boer guerrillas to ambush the British.
