Hello, I've joined just to post a photo that I've saved.

I thought that it may be of interest. The caption mentions the last long tom and F W Kitchener, who's obituary I found.

Elaine,

Many thanks for posting this interesting picture.

The name looks like Beetfontein which is not a place I can find. There is a Bitterfontein. I'll keep looking.

With thanks
David

There is a farm, "Bietfontein" near Haenertsburg which is situated in the now Limpopo Province.

There is also a monument to a Long Tom on the R37, Long Tom Pass, 21 Kms from Sabie in the Eastern Transvaaal. All the originals were of course, blown up by the Boers.
They say the last 2 Long Toms were hauled through the pass, which is very steep.
