Please help me trace my great grandfather,Dr Charles Homer Doering, who was reputed to be the first dentist in Joburg.
He moved here in 1898/9 with his family straight after graduating from the Philadelphia Dental College.
This sounds most mysterious. The British Army was galloping around the countryside, and Joburg was deserted, the Boers were in control of the mines, there was a scarcity of food etc. and there was widespread looting.
He must have "seen service" -- but who with? Roberts, Kitchener, Milner or Kruger?
After the cessation of hostilities he was definitely in private practice, till 1908, when the family, and practice, moved to CapeTown. The practice then must have been in Joburg city, as he had a horse cart to take him from his home somewhere around Braamfontein. When my greatgrandmother (nee Ora Patterson) borrowed it once, it kept stopping en route. Then she noticed one thing in common with each stop. A Tavern!
Thanks.

Hello

Try the National Archives of South Africa - there are a number of entries that would interest you.

You will need a South African researcher to access the papers for you.

Thanks, but how do I find a researcher for the National Archives, and what do they charge?
Can you not tell me how to access those interesting entries, and what are they?

Thanks,
baobab

Baobab,

There was a Pte C Doering who served in the RPR. His attestation paper is available on this site:

www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...r-regiment-surname-d

It looks like this is not your man though as his family lived in Cape Colony.

This is the only man of this name on the Boer War medals rolls.
