Hello everyone,
I am researching my GGrandfather, Michael O'Brien(b1868 Waterford) who I believe served in the 1st Royal Irish Regiment during the Boar war. He had left the regiment when he rejoined the Territorial force in Liverrpool in 1914. He died in 1915 aged 44yrs.
I would be grateful if there is any information on him and he Royal irish regiment.
Thank you.

You could try the Waterford newspaper for any letters that he wrote home to relatives during the Boer War; Waterford Public Library should have copies, probably on microfilm. And if you know of relatives who lived anywhere else you could try their local 'paper for between 1899 and 1902.

Despite the early public support in the UK for the war some newspapers weren't afraid to print letters from troops in South Africa which gave a frank view of how the war was progressing.

Hello,
The name Michael O'Brien is a very common one in both the British Army and the Royal Irish Regiment in the period in question here, WO96, WO97, WO363 and WO364 are full of them, what stage have you got to and where have you looked with regards to the details you have given in your post here?
Regards Frank

Hello,

I have taken the information from the British Army WW1 service records. Michael has stated he had previously served in 1st Royal Irish regiment. I know from the 1911 Liverpool census, that one of his children was born in Aldershot (army barracks) in 1900. If there are lots in the records, all I can do is work on his birth year. Thanks for your input.

Okay, you are very clearly at an advanced state and you certainly do not need any help from me, some people come on here and seem to think that there will be a magic file somewhere that will tell them their ancesters favourite colour when it came to buying a pair of socks!
The most important thing to do is establish his exact date and place of birth, beyond reasonable doubt, also, remember to give or take a year or two if looking at WO96 and WO97 as many people lied about their age.
Regards again Frank Kelley
