Hello there,
My name is jo, I am a photographer from Devon. I was bequeathed a darkroom full of photographic equipment, amongst which are two tin boxes full of what I think are Boer war Glass plates photos...could someone help me with identification and valuation...the images are fascinating and beautiful from a photographic perspective, but also I suspect historically significant. I look forward to hearing from anyone.

Best regards

Jojo BA(Hons) fine art photography.

Hello Jo and welcome here,
I think if you are in Great Britain and I assume you are, I would consult the National Army Museum in Chelsea before doing anything else.

Jojo,

This sounds a really wonderful 'find' and as you say may well be historically significant, I would love to see what you have but as Frank says it might well be worth consulting the National Army Museum at Chelsea.

I purchased a copy of a photograph from The museum last year and have an email address for the person I dealt with from their photographic department who was very helpful and I could put you in contact if you would like, just let me know!

Kind regards,
Scottie

Thank you Scottie, it would be really useful to have that email address...please email me [email protected] i will also rephotograph some of the plates and post them on here if anyone is interested, I think they are Magic Lantern plates, that was a kind of slide viewer used at beginning of 20th century, the plates are in superb condition for their age and are fascinating, they show canon behind sand bags, encampments, longhorn cattle pulling supply carts, teepee style tent camps, cavalry (armed men on horses) train carriage (C.G.R. Railway) full of soldiers, towns and families...general life etc...from our own brief research we think that it is the Boer War but need further help to identify the slides....any help appreciated!

All the best
Jojo
