Hello,

I am very interested in this period of history, and have been since I finished Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's book on the war this afternoon. ;)

Can anyone suggest another book to read? I read Tuchman's 'The Guns of August' on WW1, and was wondering if there was a complete, and perfect book like that out there on the Boer wars?

And thanks to the web masters for this great website...

Regards,

Barry

Hi Barry

Welcome.

Like you, I've recently become interested in the Anglo-Boer war. Some of the guys on the site recommended 'The Boer War' by Thomas Pakenham as an introduction and I would certainly endorse that recommendation. It's not comprehensive, in that, to my mind at least, it glosses over some of the actions, but it's well written and I knew an awful lot more when I'd finished than I did before! There are a lot of copies around at various prices on ebay, Amazon, etc. I read 'The Guns of August' years ago , and thought it was great book.

Bajama,

It looks as though you are a very recent convert to the Boer War. I hope you find things of interest on this site.

Patrick's recommendation is a good one and, as Paul suggests, we have a few books here to keep you occupied.

Welcome!

Good Morning Bajama......

Welcome to the forum.....

I would also recommend as a broad background you could possibly get a copy of "Hall's Handbook of The Anglo-Boer War by Darrell Hall"..... It is not so much a book like Pakenham's but when he mention lets say "De La Rey", you can look up a bit of his biography.....

The problem is there are so many books written on the subject by both sides I have a hard time recommending a single one......

Thanks so much to everyone!

Wars are, of course bad, but as history, this is so fascinating.
