During the Siege of Mafeking the surrounding forces from the Transvaal Republic were, I believe, using the following guns to bombard the town:

a French Schneider et Cie Creusot breech loading gun capable of firing a 94 pound shell;(the defenders called it amongst other things, a 94 pounder)

at least two quick firing Krupp guns which at the time were called 12 pounders. They had a range of over 6 000m and could fire either common or shrapnel;

a French Creusot, which was called a 9 pounder;

a 1lb Maxim Nordenfelt, which was also called a pom-pom.

I have other technical details of these guns.

They were also using what has been described as a 7 pounder and a 5 pounder,
but I don't have any other information.

Can a member of the Forum identify and tell me a bit more about the 7 and 5 pounder weapons please?

Kind regards,

Geoff

Hello Geoff

The 7pdr and 5pdr may well be the two guns (7pdrs) captured at Kraaipan on Oct 13.

See this thread on the Victorian Wars Forum .
