Hello from the Scottish Highlands,

Dr Montague Rust 1874 - 1950 is listed as a civilian doctor
and received these medals.Was he in fact enlisted or was it
usual for a civilian to receive decorations?He returned to
Capetown from UK in his latter years and died there 1950.

Please read the attached thread, about 1/2 way down is the mention of the Civilian Doctors that were enlisted into the RAMC....

Also yes it was common for them to be given campaign medals, a note though the word "Decorations" is used when the Medal etc. are awarded for Gallantry.

I have a note in a file that he served as a Civilian Surgeon attached to Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry during the Boer War, so would be entitled to the first medal in the photograph.
