Hello All,

Been looking at all the useful info on this site for ages so thought it only right I should finally register!

After many years on family history and making use of early retirement to research local men who served in the Great War I have turned my attention to the Boer War. Hoping to produce a database of local men who served, and am already surprised by the numbers I have come across so far from memorial transcriptions and newspaper articles. I’ve uncovered some fascinating stories in the letters sent home.

Of particular interest are active service companies formed from the Volunteer Battalions, as the Rifle Volunteers in their various forms from 1860 through to becoming Territorials provide a continuous story of service. I’m a great fan of Ian F W Beckett and his publications on the auxiliary forces.
