Hello to all, been looking for a site like this for an age, ok where do I start

my great, great uncle was Lt Col David Tyrie Laing killed in action 3rd Jan 1901,i have some pictures of him and I have an ebony truncheon and a union jack flag which allegedly flew over Lord Robert's tent, I would love to find out if it is the flag, which has been authenticated by Philips to be of that date, I was wondering if ant one had any pictures or where I could find one ?
also the cap badge, is it unusual to have a persons initials on it except maybe the reigning monarch...maybe someone could enlighten me.
Anyway I have attached a few pictures

regards

Alex

Hi Alex. Welcome.
I presume you have seen this. Have you a photo album of Laing's time in South Africa?

Hello Alex,
Laing was quite a colourful character, but, notwithstanding his service in the Anglo Boer War, I feel he was at his very best as the commanding officer of the Belingwe Field Force in 1896.
I dare say, the fight for Inugu Mountain in July would have been one of the hardest of his life, moreover, don't forget he had been around to see and fully understand the engagements at Bembesi and Shangani.
I am sure he would have looked back with considerable pride at all those under his command.
Kind regards Frank Kelley

Frank for that snippet of information, I knew he was involved with the Belingwe Field Force back in 1896 with his good friend Cecil Rhodes,

I know he was some sort security officer in the mining business, the DeBeers were friends , in-between that he went to the Klondike and then went back to South Africa / Rhodesia.
my grandfather has a lot of his possessions, but he moved to a smaller house in the 1970's and there was no room for them so he burned them.........he was selfish like that, I know from what has been said there were uniforms, Zulu items and the like.

would like to know if any medals were issued to him or sent home after his death
