Hello Frank, I do apologise.. It is a rather small photo.. I will attach a larger one. The photo has the year as 1901 written on the back. It also has the name JF Stewart, so I am only assuming that it is my relative. It is not in great condition and I have been told there are more to come. With a little research I found the location as O'Nels Cottage, and not Neils Farm as written on the photo! I would be very interested to know what you think of it.. Regards, Michael

Hello Michael,
The picture appears to show an armed civilian, do you believe this to be Stewart or are you merely assuming it might be?

Hello Frank, The photo was sent to me by an elderly relative of mine... I am only assuming it is of my relative,John, as it has his name and the date on the rear. I do not know what John Francis Stewart looked like, so I'm unsure. The information I have is limited and my knowledge on the Boer War is even more limited.. However, I as I said, I am very keen to learn more about this person.

Hello Michael,
I really don't know what to think, looking at the picture, the beard perhaps makes this gentleman appear older than he may actually be, the firearm, reminds me of an old Westley Richards carbine.

Hello again Frank, Thank-you for your thoughts on the photo. I have had another sent to me (is it a postcard?). I will for now, not assume that the other photo is of my G/Grandfather. Is there any way I can find more information on his service in the Transvaal Constabulary? Were they used as Police or mounted troops? There seems to be very little on the internet about this unit, and I'm hoping here is the place to find out more. Any direction/advice would be greatly appreciated. Your thoughts on this photo?
Regards, Michael

Hello Michael,
The Provisional Transvaal Constabulary, was just that, a provisional force set up after Pretoria had been occupied, by the new provisional administration, headed by Lord Milner.
It's new members came from across the empire and included the SAMIF, British Army and even the Natal Volunteers, they were active on the veldt for a short time until the South African Constabulary was deployed.
That is a great image, I like the very obvious damage to the locomotive in the foreground
Regards Frank
