I have just joined the website and am interested in tracing the progress of the 1st Battallion Gordon Highlanders in the Boer war.
My grandfather Alexander Milne (6687) fought in this conflict and i have 1 of his medals and a letter from him to his father when he was in Bloemfontein. I have managed to trace some of his movements pricipally from the bars on his medal and i also know through my research to date that he arrived in SA on the "Cheshire" on the 29/11/1899.
I would appreciate any information/details of the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders involvement.

Many thanks
johns

Welcome Johns,

I'll dig out the name of a book on the Highlanders which will give you a lot of information on their movements.

Best wishes

Many thanks for the welcome. I will have a look at the info you pointed me to. I'm sure it will help.
I seem to have lost his route following the event at Thabanchu and at the waterworks in Bloemfontein.
Also his movements following the battalions inviolvement at the taking of Johannesburg. Will have a look at the site you suggested and see if that helps.
Would it be of interest to you if i send a copy of his letter?

regards
Johns

There's an excellent regimental history by A.D. Greenhill-Gardyne.
