Hello Gents
My collection has born fruit since my first QSA and I now boast 6 QSA's en 2 KSA and a little library on the subject. Only 4 clasps "to go" :)
Latest acquisition is a DoK RoM combination to Gregory Edward Patrick KLH
Biggins' Kimberley Siege Account Medal Roll confirms the DoK and states him being wounded 25 Nov 99.which was the Attack on Carter's Ridge. In the casualty list on pg 48 of the mentioned work I do find Trooper E Gregory, KLH, severely wounded.
However, if I check the indivdual attestationimages here on the forum I find a second Trooper Gregory E with the Kimberley Horse. This second person is not mentioned in Biggins' Kimberley account/roll. You can probably already guess where this is heading... how can we be sure which of both troopers was wounded and why is only one of them mentioned in the medal roll? Just not seeing it here it seems.
Thanks for your help
Kind regards
Roel

Roel,

I can see the confusion here which I think is caused by an error in the nominal roll.

The medal rolls are consistent:

130 Tpr E P Gregory joined the KLH on either 19th or 20th Oct 99. After being wounded on 25 Nov 99 I believe he transferred to the KTG.

On 20 Dec 00 he was discharged from the KLH.

He is listed on the KLH medal roll (WO100/255p18) with clasps are Paardeberg, DoK, RoM & Tr. A note mentions he served in SRG with number 190

He is listed on the KTG medal roll (WO100/282p58). A note mentions he served in SRG with number 190.

He must have fully recovered from his wounds to be chosen to take the supplies to Paardeberg in Feb 00.

On 12 Feb 01 he joined Scott's Railway Guards as 190 Sergeant Major. His name is crossed through on the SRG medal roll (WO100/270p40) as his medal was issued off the KLH roll. His entry here links him to service in the KTG and as 130 KLH.

He is not listed on the SRG nominal roll.

The medal roll data is consistent and suggests he served KLH - KTG - KLH - SRG.

The issue you highlight is the KH nominal roll and the two entries for Gregory, E.

On the left hand side of the page, previous and subsequent service is listed. Against the first entry, 1262 Gregory E, the note says 'Sub[sequent] SRG 190'

There is no note against 130/166 Gregory E P.

My view is either that when Edward Patrick left the KTG on the ending of the siege in Feb or Mar 1900 he rejoined the KLH and was issued with a new number (1262) and this was linked in the nominal roll to his subsequent service in SRG. An alternative and probably more likely explanation is that he was discharged from the KLH on 5 Jun 00 and then signed up for a further 6 months of service and it was this re-joining that generated the new number.

I think there is only one E Gregory in Kimberley at the time.

This view is supported by:

1. No medal was issued to 1262 E Gregory as he does not appear on any medal roll.

2. In collating the information for Kimberley book I reconciled the siege nominal roll with information from the medals rolls. For the majority of names on this list, a match could be found. There were however some names that I I could not trace and these were shown in grey in the text. There was no one of the name Gregory for whom no match could be found.

The medal you have is excellent and I would have no second thoughts before adding it to my own collection.

With best wishes
David

Hello Roel,
WO127 is quite enough for me, so I would be with David on this matter, it is a pity that only the rank is on the medal, but, this does in no way detract.
Kimberley men, are, from experience, really quite easy to research and your first port of call should be the library in Kimberley, moreover, if you are here in Great Britain, I would pop down to Kew and check WO126/127-129 too, hopefully his paper will have survived.
For me at least, it is very important to remember that the Kimberley Horse and Kimberley Light Horse were actually merged together before disbandment on the 30th of June 1902 in Kimberley, having both been raised together on the 28th of November 1899.
A superb medal and not at all expensive either and as David points out, clearly verified in three volumes of WO100.
Kind regards Frank

Hello gents,
Thank you very much for the comprehensive reply. It all makes sense and I can follow the train of thought. I spotted the medal for sale and thanks to Mr. Biggins publications I could identify him as a casualty. Only after the purchase I started researching a bit more and stumbled across the sources (nominal rolls) available here on line. I knew the notes against the name (more often then not) probably were keys in interpreting the registration but couldn't readily read them (was going to be my next question :)
Quite happy with this addition to the collection actually. My collecting goal for 2014 being to collect an interesting "sample" of each QSA clasp. Still have Wepener, Elandslaagte, Rhodesia and of course DoM to go.
Would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Biggins for his splendid publications on the matter. I do have Kimberley, Talana and Elandslaagte in my personal library and they form the key source for me to understand the battles and look for a suitable medal for the collection. Any other related projects in progress?
Kind regards and a nice weekend!
Roel
