Hello to everyone on the forum, I am Matthew Goldsmith.

I am currently doing some research in to my Great Grandfater, William Cliffe. This has stemmed from me acquiring his WW1 records, where he fought at Gallipoli for the ANZACS. In the Australian records, it stated that he had previously fought in the boar war, with the Lancashire Fusiliers.

I have managed to find a mention of him on this site - Cliffe W 4895 Private 6th Battalion Source: QSA roll Lancashire Fusiliers.

I would be eternally grateful for any information relating to my Great Grandfather or the Battalions movements in which he served. He was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1882.

Many thanks,

Matthew.

Hello Matthew,

And a warm welcome to the forum.
Had a look at the medal rolls on Ancestry and William Cliffe's entitlements are shown in WO100/179
One roll shows his entitlement clasps for his QSA as Cape Colony Orange Free State and Transvaal
On a supplementary roll it shows he earned the South Africa 1901 date clasp.
Interestingly in one of the rolls remarks columns its states " joined 1DGDS 14/05/02 I take that as 1st Dragoon Guards.
The rolls confirm 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.

Regards
Paul :)

Hello,

Many thanks for the information Paul. It was really helpful.

I have now been able to reference wo 100/179 at the national archive.

Unfortunately his medals were sold by an aging family member about 50 years ago, along with his ww1 campaign medals.

I will continue my search......

Thanks again.

Matthew.
